50k Finished!
I can appreciate my Tahoe Rim Trail 50k finish much more now that I have been to the massage therapist. The catch phrase for the TRT is "A Glimpse of Heaven, A Taste of Hell" - Marketing genius and the truth of a medieval prophet! The view looking down on Lake Tahoe from 8,000ft was just amazing. The route was mostly single track through a variety of gorgeous forest habitats. There were only a few water crossings, and this time of year not significant enough to get wet – there were however a few fun snow field crossings just to add a touch of whimsy. The aid stations were numerous, well stocked, and had excellent volunteers (one had a massage therapist and two were decked out in party themes – Mardi-Gras and Luau!). My legs held out pretty well until about mile 23 when my IT band started acting up and the folks at the aid station set me up with a bag of ice for 10 minutes – which made the last 7 miles all downhill (IT bands hate downhill) a nightmare of pain. I hobbled across the finish with the aforementioned heaven and hell fighting for the dominant sentiment. I had hoped to finish in 8:30 – which ended up being my running time – my finish time with aid stations and ice was 9:16 – I’m pretty good with that! I have much respect for all of the 50m and 100m finishers – it now stands as the toughest race I know. I must say – it is also the most well organized and best supported race I know. I am extremely impressed with every aspect of how this race was directed and put on – especially since the director was very responsive to both phone and e-mail. I would love to have a small contingent of slimy, green avocados with me out there next year!
