Red Bluff Tehema Extreme

After getting the maps we had 30 secs to study them before the race start. Short bike ride on fireroad.

Karen and JonDrop bikes, run down hill to 2 cps, easily located but one on the far side of knee deep creek. Back to bikes. Hike a bike up big rock strewn hill, jon towing.

Cp at top, down to river level, cross creek at trail- unfortunately water is chest high on j, k swimming for first time.

Get to boats ahead of Ian's team. Blow up rafts. 15 mins downriver, very fast current.

Long run- up to first cp on top of hill, jon and ian adamson working together on nav, then down across creek fast flowing. K swims again,
with maps.

Run back to river- beautiful wildflowers, j carrying everything, and towing.

Back on bikes, pick up a couple of cps and then 3 mile bike race w/ Ian Adamson team. Flat out. J&K cross line before all of ian's team for 1st place (2 person), 3rd overall.

Goals ARA Race: Philadelphia, PA

Just wanted to let everyone know I'm going back east to race in the GOALS ARA Sprint AR Race in Philadelphia on April 30th. I'll be racing with my old (and we are getting up there) college buddy Tom Styer. It will be his 2nd AR Race. The Savage ~ 20 Miles ~ Chester County, PA. There is a link to Goals ARA web site below.

Last year we raced as a team of two and a team of three...actually we raced as one big team of five. FYI, the more people on the team the longer some things take especially TA's. Raced with 4 newbie's Tom who is racing again this year and Steve McDonnell, John Pinto and Scott Minor. Everyone did great and we all finished the race in one piece. Can't say I didn't get us lost a few times...sorry boys. In any case we did pretty well at last years race, considering it was the rest of the crews first race and there were a lot of cobwebs to dust off. ;-) We came in as a team of 5 but the three person male team placed 3rd in that Division. The two person male teams were a little faster it seems.

Since I will be navigating we may get a little lost/turned-around/upside-down...who knows. Right now we are racing as a two person male team. Tom, I'm expecting to place in the top 5 so be ready to go fast. I don't care about your broken pinky toe…you don't need that one anyway. Now, if Leesa will race with us we will have a 3 person co-ed team. Leesa...I'm calling you out here. You have been wanting to race now come on out and do it...No Excuses...Just Do it. I sound like a Nike ad.

I'll post a race report and results after its all over.

Over and out,

BAOC Spring Lake: Yellow and Sprint Courses

Last Saturday Adam Armijo and I participated in the Bay Area Orienteering Club's event at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, CA. The race had a White, Yellow, Sprint and a special Easter egg hunt format. Turnout was pretty low. Probably due to the never-ending rains and the holiday weekend. I hadn't thought or planned on doing two courses in one day, however these seemed to be much shorter than out previous race down in Woodside a few weeks back.

We started off with the Yellow course and decided to do the Sprint second. Armijo wanted to work on his navigation skills so our goal was to let him make most of the decisions. Were also raced as technically two different teams however stayed together through the courses.

Near the beginning was the most treacherous part of the course. A moss covered slick granite rock field. The footing was hazardous. On the Spring course I slipped, went completely airborne almost cracked my head and instead taking good sized chunk out of my knee. After I shook it off, we continued racing and 10 minutes later discovering my lower leg covered an blood. Seems the cut was worse than I thought. Figures one time I don't have my trusty bandanna to bandage it up.

We finished the Yellow course in first and second place and the Sprint course in sixth and seventh places. Not to bad. I think I'm hooked on this orienteering thing.

Results:
http://baoc.org/wiki/Results/2006/Spring_Lake

Yellow Course (3.5 km, 65 m climb, 12 controls)
1 Adam Doti 34:14
2 Taylor Pipas, Jeff Green, Adam Armijo 34:34

Sprint Course (3.0 km, 85 m climb, 17 controls)
6 Adam Doti 31:12 (2nd course)
7 Jeff Green, Adam Armijo & Taylor Pipas 31:38 (2nd course)

Postlogue: On the way home Adam wanted to stop at the Gnass airport field in Novato to check out what services they offered so he can continue building on his pilots license. The airport was empty so we pulled into the first official looking building we saw and parked. As we walked up to the door a SUV pulled up and a man got out and also made for the entrance. Took me a minute to fully realize it was Sammy Hagar which was confirmed by watching the look at Adam's and Taylor's faces as I caught up to them. We chatted a few hellos and shook hands once inside and offered our in-flight services which he politely declined but invited us to his Cinco deMayo party in Tahoe. See ya Sammy!

Cal Eco #1 Auburn

Dirty Avocados finish 9th in Auburn Cal Eco Adventure

This past weekend, the Dirty Avocados raced in the first event in thisyear's Cal Eco Adventure Series, put on in Auburn, California by California Sports Marketing. Despite incredible amounts of rain both before and after the race, the weather held to make for a perfect racing weekend.

Auburn's location above the American River canyon and its trails connecting the surrounding areas make it a fantastic, challenging location for an adventure race. It seems as though every trail begins or ends at the top of a massive climb, and this year's course exploited that fact for incredible views and thigh-burning ascents.

The Dirty Avocados turned out in snazzy new jerseys for the midday start at Granite Beach in the Folsom State Recreation Area, ready for the challenges of the first race put on by Dan Barger in a couple years. During the pre-race briefing, Dan made it clear that the race would be a real challenge, but would reward participants with incredible views and real adventure among the hills and canyons of the American River.

The race began with a short orienteering section, in which teams could choose to get any two of four checkpoints set in the Granite Beach area of Folsom SRA. There followed a short paddle across the west arm of Folsom Lake, another short navigation section in the Peninsula Campground, and then a longer paddle up the North Fork of Folsom Lake. Due to the recent rains, the North Fork was full of logs and branches.

Following a quick transition out of the boats, the race continued up the Pioneer Express Trail to Auburn, where teams had the choice to continue on foot or take their mountain bikes. The downside of taking bikes was a restriction on riding some portions of the trails up out of the Confluence area heading up to Cool. Despite this restriction, most teams elected to take bikes, and push them up that long climb out of the canyon.

Once on top, the race progressed into a challenging navigation section, sort of orienteering in an adventure racing style. Checkpoints spread all over the Olmstead Loop area ensured that every racer got to see the region around Cool in detail.

Following the navigation section, the race transitioned back to running, along the Western States trail, down to the Middle Fork of the American River, and back to the Confluence area. A quick mountain bike ride up and around a portion of Auburn SRA, and then back to foot travel for the final few miles climbing up the Western States trail to the finish in Auburn.

The Dirty Avocados fielded two 4-person coed teams in this event. The Pits (Brian Schmitz, Will Gilmore, Jennifer Stilwell, Kent Hoxsey) and The Skins (Adam Armijo, Craig Leidholm, Linda McLean, Donato Polignone). The Dirty Avocados would like to thank CSM Events and all the volunteers for putting on a great race, and look forward to the next installment in the Cal Eco Series at Kernville.

Featured Race Food!

Big fan of White Castle hamburgers during a long race. Handy, AR-appropriate size, topped with little onion bits for flava! Yum!

Who needs all those high-tec gels and bars when garbage like this works so well!
