BAOC Spring Lake: Yellow and Sprint Courses
Last Saturday Adam Armijo and I participated in the Bay Area Orienteering Club's event at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, CA. The race had a White, Yellow, Sprint and a special Easter egg hunt format. Turnout was pretty low. Probably due to the never-ending rains and the holiday weekend. I hadn't thought or planned on doing two courses in one day, however these seemed to be much shorter than out previous race down in Woodside a few weeks back.
We started off with the Yellow course and decided to do the Sprint second. Armijo wanted to work on his navigation skills so our goal was to let him make most of the decisions. Were also raced as technically two different teams however stayed together through the courses.
Near the beginning was the most treacherous part of the course. A moss covered slick granite rock field. The footing was hazardous. On the Spring course I slipped, went completely airborne almost cracked my head and instead taking good sized chunk out of my knee. After I shook it off, we continued racing and 10 minutes later discovering my lower leg covered an blood. Seems the cut was worse than I thought. Figures one time I don't have my trusty bandanna to bandage it up.
We finished the Yellow course in first and second place and the Sprint course in sixth and seventh places. Not to bad. I think I'm hooked on this orienteering thing.

Postlogue: On the way home Adam wanted to stop at the Gnass airport field in Novato to check out what services they offered so he can continue building on his pilots license. The airport was empty so we pulled into the first official looking building we saw and parked. As we walked up to the door a SUV pulled up and a man got out and also made for the entrance. Took me a minute to fully realize it was Sammy Hagar which was confirmed by watching the look at Adam's and Taylor's faces as I caught up to them. We chatted a few hellos and shook hands once inside and offered our in-flight services which he politely declined but invited us to his Cinco deMayo party in Tahoe. See ya Sammy!
